An Interview with Lindsay of Shrimp Salad Circus

1. What inspires you to come up with new designs?

I am often really inspired by nature, but lately I've been into geometric designs, patterns, and two dimensional art. Some of the lines and color combinations in modern art are just too fantastic to pass up!

2. How long have you been creating?

I've been making odds and ends since I was old enough to hold one of those big, fat crayons! I grew up in an artsy household, and I was a total nerd. As a child, I even made a "baby book" for my cat, complete with pawprints and a lock of his fur. Creepy? Maybe...

3. Where do you do your work? Do you have a dedicated area of your home, or?

I live in a teensy little apartment caught somewhere in between a studio and a one-bedroom, so I do all my designing pretty much anywhere that doesn't have a cat sleeping on it! Command Central is a vintage office desk that I refinished with a lot of sandpaper and spray paint, and I take all my pictures in the living room next to my favorite big window.

4. Tell us about a goal you have for your business.

The biggest goal that I have for Shrimp Salad Circus right now is to break into the bricks-and-mortar market. I have only sold online to date, and I would love to get my work into a few local boutiques. I'm currently working on a lookbook to distribute to shopkeepers. Wish me luck!

5. What is your favorite album?

My favorite album is "The Good Old Days," a mix tape (okay, fine - mix CD) that my bestie made me. She's the best DJ I know, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I find all my new bands from her.

6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Five years from now, I see a handful more stamps in my passport, the same sweet guy in my life, and a dog to keep my boys company. What's a cat without a dog, anyhow? Can I dream for this next bit? I want to open a little coffee shop and boutique so that I can hawk my wares while meeting everybody in town and being my own boss. I'll let you know how it goes...

7. What is your favorite thing to do on a weekend?

As a grad student who's involved uptohere in everything I can get my hands on, I kind of live for the weekends. I love waking up late on Saturday mornings to my guy's amazing breakfast concoctions and then just laying around reading until an unreasonably late hour. When it's anywhere above freezing, I like to eventually meet the light of day for a run, some porch-sitting, or just a bike ride around town snapping pictures with my Holga. I'd probably cap off the ideal weekend with a long, hot bubble bath and a tall glass of shiraz.

8. Tell us about a new skill you'd like to learn.

I'm taking a crochet class right now, but since I've kind of got that down pat at this point, I think that the next thing I'd like to pick up is metalwork. And calligraphy. And vegetable-gardening. I could go on for days. Weeks...

9. Where is your happy place?

My happy place is in Guatemala. All of it. It's the loveliest country I've ever been to, full of some of the kindest people on the planet. My "domestic" happy place would be cuddled up with Mish and Rosco (my gatos) and a cup of steaming Earl Grey, reading my Kindle all day long.

10. Type any random thought here

I'm 5'10", and I have recently developed an aversion to capital letters.
