An Interview with Michelle Maule + Giveaway

1. How long have you been making art?

I've been making art for a little over ten years now. It seems like longer than that!

2. Do you have a special spot in your home as a studio? Tell us about it

I do! I do a lot of my pen and gouache works on paper, here at home. I live in a one bedroom apartment, and my "studio" shares my living room space.
I have a separate studio in the industrial area of Portland where I use my oil paints. I share the space with 40 other artists. We all have our own little areas separated my walls made from recycled materials.

3. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I have no idea! Ha! I'd love to still be making art and hopefully full time. I work part time at a local grocery store. They take good care of me there, and provide full health benefits, dental, vision, paid vacation/sick time, and 401(k). Once I can pay for all that with my art, alone, I'll quit my job!

4. What was the coolest sale you ever made?

There have been so many! I think one of the very coolest has to be when I sold some prints to a movie production company.
One of the prints ended up in the movie "The Town" with Ben affleck and Blake Lively. My boyfriend and I went to go see the movie, to see if we could see my work, and lo and behold we saw it! That was really awesome!

5. Tell us about a new skill you would like to learn

I'd love to learn how to knit! it seems so relaxing and I love a good cozy sweater. Plus I could make cute sweaters for my little dog!

You could win this print!

Winter Whispers

There is nothing quite like a peaceful morning stroll on a crisp winter morning
with the sound of snow under your feet,
white angelic glitter of fresh powder snow dancing with the wind,
and birds and squirrels scurrying from one tree to the next.
Andrea of Argentina creates such wonderfully enchanting pieces of art
from her watercolor to her collage work
you can't help but find your self lost in her imagination,
and as we are yet to see snow in Portland
I am left to dream of the wonders of winter

Check out Andrea's work by visiting her shop

Enough

I had the great honor of meeting Artist Cate Anevski
at last years Holiday Crafty wonderland Extravaganza in Portland, OR
(which btw is this coming Sunday at the Oregon Convention Center-
You will find myself, Cate and 198 other amazingly talented artisans
from the North West at this years event.
If you call Portland home I would HIGHLY recommend making a day of it!)
Anywho~ Cate and I have become quite good friends and I am a BIG fan of her artwork.
Each piece has a unique spirit all it's own.
My first impression of this watercolor and ink piece entitled Enough
was that the poor thing had a terribly cold or flu
but it's true meaning is far more personal
as Cate shared that she did this piece right after her beloved kitty cat passed away
and in midst of moving to Portland from St Louis.
She described in detail how overwhelming it was to trust
that they were making the right decision.
This piece represents for Cate a major turning point in her life
and while it wasn't easy
Cate and her boyfriend are so happy they followed their hearts.
~
While we might not be facing such drastic unknowns
the holiday season can be truly overwhelming
remind yourself that you can only give so much of yourself
and find a moment or two to just relax and enjoy some eggnog.
